We are in the midst of a “Veto Senate Bill 1171” letter writing campaign with a goal of sending 1,000 handwritten letters to Gov. Rick Snyder urging him to uphold the constitution, stand with Michigan’s tipped and minimum wage workers and veto SB 1171.
The One Fair Wage proposal received support from more than 400,000 Michigan voters only to have the rug pulled from under us after the election during lame-duck session.
It is crunch time and we need all hands on deck to ensure Gov. Snyder hears our message loud and clear. Please join our letter campaign and urge Gov. Snyder to veto SB 1171.
My name is___________________ and I support tipped workers and One Fair Wage. SB 1171 is an unconstitutional power grab. Regardless of your beliefs about raising the minimum wage, SB 1171 is just plain wrong and smacks of dirty politics. Living off the subminimum wage of $3.52 plus tips is impossible – talk about fluctuating income, economic instability and having to deal with sexual harassment.
Restaurant workers in Minnesota get the full minimum wage plus tips and their industry is actually growing faster than Michigan’s. One Fair Wage is good for business – paying people a full minimum wage reduces turnover and increases profitability. 400,000 of us workers and our allies signed petitions to put this issue on the ballot so restaurant workers can get a full minimum wage with tips on top.
Regardless of what your views on the issue might be, I hope you will uphold our democratic rights to move this issue; but I hope you will also stand with us and the nearly 100 restaurant owners statewide who agree with us. I want you to protect our raises. I want you to veto Senate Bill 1171.
